Consumers assigned a 40% chance of more federal welfare benefits in next 12 months

US consumers are expecting more fiscal support from the government over the next 12 months, New York Fed survey results show.

The survey, which was carried out between April 2 and April 30, finds that consumers on average see a 40% chance that more federal welfare benefits will be administered over the next year.

The likelihood that affordable housing benefits and student debt forgiveness programmes will be expanded over the same period was roughly 35% and 25% respectively, the survey finds.
