New approach to measuring GDP per capita generates fresh insights

Researchers have updated measurements of real GDP per capita over the very long run contained in the Maddison Project Database, helping to generate new insights into the development of modern economies.

The new data and an accompanying paper were published in January by the University of Groningen. Researchers Jutta Bolt, Robert Inklaar, Herman de Jong and Jan Luiten van Zanden write the original methodology developed by Angus Maddison relied on a cross-country comparison for the year 1990 that
