Protectionism triggers ‘rising level of concern’ in US – Powell

Fed chair thinks it is difficult to predict the effect of trade barriers on the economy

The chair of the US Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, has said the central bank’s contacts are reporting increasing concern about the effects of tariffs recently imposed by the Trump administration.

On July 12, in a radio interview with the programme Marketplace, Powell acknowledged it is difficult to forecast the actual impact of these measures on the economy. But he affirmed the Fed is “hearing a rising level of concern about the effects of changes in trade policy” from the network of contacts
