Lockhart backs ‘selective’ regulation of shadow banks

Atlanta Fed president says ‘very close’ monitoring is a minimum

Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta president Dennis Lockhart today spoke in favour of "selective" supervision and regulation in both the banking and shadow banking sectors of the US economy.

Lockhart told an audience at the University of Georgia authorities should at least monitor the "large, growing and opaque" shadow banking sector "very closely with ever-improving techniques".

Beyond that, he said, authorities should avoid applying "full-spectrum" prudential supervision and regulation of all
