Research pinpoints critical frequencies

The Bank for International Settlements has found critical frequencies for sampling some of the key economic indicators.

The BIS's research indicates that dollar-euro exchange rates should only be sampled once every 15 to 20 seconds otherwise estimates will be upwardly biased. Returns on ten-year US Treasury securities should usually only be sampled no more than once every two to three minutes.

The paper also finds that by using kernel estimators the critical sampling frequency can increase.
