Mario Vella ‘expected’ to be new Maltese governor
Economist ‘expected’ to be in post on July 1, with president expected to approve choice
Mario Vella is "expected" to become the new governor of the Central Bank of Malta on July 1, after he was nominated by the prime minister to take over from Josef Bonnici, a government spokesperson has said.
The central bank's deputy governor, Alfred Mifsud, had been considered a leading candidate for the role, but formally withdrew from the race last week after facing corruption allegations. Mifsud has denied all accusations and is in the process of taking legal action against their sources.
