Conditions ‘in place’ for repo expansion in East Asia and Pacific

Repo markets still ‘not as large as might be expected’ in the region

Repo markets in several East Asian and Pacific countries are "not as large or as active as might be expected" given the size of their underlying debt markets, according to a study conducted by central bankers in the region.

A working group on financial markets at the Executives' Meeting of East Asia-Pacific Central Banks (EMEAP) reviewed the repo markets in its 11 member states – including Australia, China and Japan – and published its findings earlier this week.
