Biography - Mervyn Allister King

Mervyn King is the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England responsible for monetary policy, and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee.

He was appointed Deputy Governor on 1 June 1998. Before that he was the Bank of England's Chief Economist and Executive Director since joining the Bank in March 1991, and was a founder member of the Monetary Policy Committee in May 1997. Mervyn King was a non-executive director of the Bank from 1990 to 1991.

Born in 1948, Mervyn King studied at King's College
