New South African president supports pan-African currency
Cyril Ramaphosa says it is time Africa abandons “colonial mentality” and adopts common currency
South Africa’s new president has backed the creation of a pan-African currency in the belief that it would align the continent with the rest of the world.
Speaking on a panel at the African Continental Free Trade Area Business Forum in Rwanda on March 20, Cyril Ramaphosa stressed a common currency is needed for investment and intra-African trade to flourish.
“The hour, the day and the moment may have arrived for Africa to have its own currency,” he said.
Ramaphosa added it was time for Africa
