Former head of the International Monetary Fund, Horst Kohler, was narrowly elected Germany's new president last Sunday, 23 May.

A special assembly of lawmakers and state delegates voted 604-to-589 Sunday in Berlin, approving Mr. Kohler to the mostly ceremonial post.

Speaking after the vote, he vowed to push for economic reforms during his five-year term. He also said Germany will have to fight for its place in the 21st century.
