Central Bank of Iran accused of role in ‘illicit oil network’
US Treasury targets central bank officials in latest round of sanctions
The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has been accused by the US Treasury of being a key player in an “illicit Russia-Iran oil network” supporting regimes in the Middle East.
The Treasury claims Iran has worked with Russian companies to channel oil to the Syrian government. In return, the regime of Bashar al-Assad allegedly funnels dollars back to Iran and the Central Bank of Iran facilitates transfers on to Hamas and Hezbollah, which are designated as terrorist organisations by the US.
