Lagarde promotes deeper Asian economic integration

Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, urged greater co-operation within Asia in a lecture in Malaysia on November 14.

The region can benefit from opening "even more doors" to trade, Lagarde said. As Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) shift towards high-income status, they will need to support domestic consumption and a strong middle class, she said, and regional integration presents opportunities of mutual gain.
