People's Bank of China (PBoC) governor Zhou Xiaochuan hinted that the country could take significant steps toward opening up its capital account this year, during a Beijing panel discussion on March 22 with International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde.

The Chinese government is seeking to internationalise the renminbi to accommodate the country's growth on the international stage, eventually establishing it as a global reserve currency.
