Basel Committee proposes strict treatment of crypto asset exposures

Crypto assets such as bitcoin will face risk weight of 1,250%

Banks’ exposures to crypto assets such as bitcoin would face a high capital requirement, according to proposals outlined by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

Such assets would face a “conservative” risk weight of 1,250% applied to the maximum of long and short positions, the BCBS said in a consultation document published on June 10.
