RBI’s CBDC pilot has 1.5 million users, says Das

Governor says project is aiming to reach one million daily transactions by December

The Reserve Bank of India’s central bank digital currency trial has been rolled out to 1.5 million users, governor Shaktikanta Das said on September 6.

Das gave the update on the e-rupee pilot project, which was launched in December 2022, during a fintech festival in Mumbai. He told the audience the pilot is being operated through 13 banks in 26 cities. Just over 300,000 merchants are currently accepting payments in CBDC.
