Cuba central bank official says cash shortage is ‘critical situation’
Banks struggle to meet demand as government tries to expand use of e-payments
A senior official at Cuba’s central bank admitted on August 14 that cash shortages have created “a critical situation”. The statement followed the imposition of new limits on cash use earlier this month.
Deputy governor Alberto Quiñones Betancourt said Cuban banks lack enough cash “to cover all the demand from the population and economic actors”, according to a central bank press release.
Appearing on state television, Quiñones denied that a recent drive to channel payments through the formal
