ECB to choose new euro banknote designs by 2024

Banknote designs will be chosen by governing council, but public input will be vital

The European Central Bank plans to pick new euro banknotes designs by 2024, it announced today (December 6).

“After 20 years, it’s time to review the look of our banknotes to make them more relatable to Europeans of all ages and backgrounds,” ECB president Christine Lagarde said in a statement.

The euro is currently the official currency of 19 countries within the European Union. It was first introduced in 1999.
