Printing is the most outsourced area of the cash cycle

Just over 60% of survey respondents contract out currency printing

Currency printing is the most outsourced activity of the cash cycle of banknotes, with 62% of Currency Benchmarks 2020 respondents saying they contract externally in this area. Other areas of the cash cycle are more likely to be kept in-house, with 32% of respondents saying they outsource design; 29%, distribution; and 18%, sorting.

In total 24 central banks, or 71% of survey respondents, said they outsource at least one function. The outsourcing of two functions was the most common response
