Fewer central banks report climate strategy

Incineration still most common practice among institutions recycling banknotes

The proportion of central bank currency departments with a climate strategy declined in the Currency Benchmarks 2022. Of the 30 participating central banks, just 23.3% of currency departments had a climate strategy, a fall from 2020 and 2021.

The benchmarks data also revealed an uptick in the number of jurisdictions now recycling banknotes, from 45% last year to 67.7% this year.
